ILLNESS STRIKES 10 WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOLS — The Washoe County Health District reports gastrointestinal illness outbreaks in 10 schools and day cares have sickened nearly 400 people. Health officials are working with the schools and daycare centers involved, documenting the illnesses and making recommendations to slow the spread, including excluding sick people and thoroughly cleaning shared surfaces. One key to avoiding these illnesses is to follow effective hand-washing procedures. Schools affected by the outbreak are Alice Smith, Bernice Mathews, Stead Elementary, O’Brien Middle, Bud Beasley Elementary, McQueen High, Desert Heights Elementary, Grace Warner Elementary, Nancy Gomes Elementary, and Marvin Picollo.
