News Talk 780 KOH is joining with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and Double Diamond Athletic Club to ask for your help during the Operation Resilience Food Drive for Hungry Veterans. The effort is inspired by SGT John Knott, a local disabled veteran soldier medic of the Nevada Army National Guard who realized the need in our community to feed our hungry and homeless veterans. Businesses may sign up to be collection locations now through Thursday Dec 7th. All food collected will be brought to Double Diamond Athletic Club, and on December 8th all veterans are invited to bring a backpack, fill it up and march from Double Diamond Athletic Club north on Virginia St under the arch to Catholic Charities Food Pantry. The route will be from DDAC up South Virginia Street, with stops at Ethan Allan Furniture and the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, through Midtown to the Reno Arch and finishing at Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada on 4th Street. All donations will be processed and on December 22nd food will be distributed to Veterans and families registered with the food pantry.
The goal of the effort is not only to help feed our hungry Veterans, bit to also raise awareness of the basic needs of Veterans. Northern Nevada has a high population of homeless or nearly homeless veterans and their families and we need to help. In 2015, Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada provided assistance to more than 2,500 veterans who needed food, permanent housing, a job and other emergency services. 80% of those individuals sought help from St. Vincent’s Food Pantry.
The Crossroads program (a partnership between Catholic Charities, Washoe County Social Services and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office) provides housing and drug/alcohol counseling for up to 24 veterans at any given time through the Park House.
Center of Influence started partnering with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada in early 2016 and provides resources (food, SNAP sign-ups, help paying utility bills, job acquisition, clothing vouchers, etc.) for veterans and their families on a monthly basis.
Sign up to be a collection location and join us on December 7th to collect the donations. If you are a Veteran, retired military or currently serving bring your ruck sack and join in the march December 8th to help get the food to the pantry. Call 322-7073 or visit ccsnn.org for info.
