The Aspen Fire north of Sparks has scorched over 300 acres after starting near Palomino Valley Saturday night. Crews have worked day & night since the fire started to control the spread. The fire is burning in cheat grass, brush and juniper in steep and rocky terrain. Mandatory evacuations are in place along Tree Farm Road and the south side of Wilcox Canyon. Numerous residential structures are threatened. An evacuation center is set up at the Ironwood Stables. The fire is currently 10 percent contained.
The Draw fire burning near Eastgate, Nevada has now burned an estimated 21,000 acres. Sunday, heavy smoke forced officials to close U-S 50 between Eastgate and Austin, the roadway has since reopened. It’s burning in the Clan Alpine Mountains in that area, and is not currently a threat to any structures. The fire broke out Friday, and it is believed to have been naturally caused. There is no estimate of containment.
Firefighters spent the weekend battling the Winnemucca Ranch Fire north of Sparks which has now scorched an estimated 4,800 acres. The voluntary evacuation order has been lifted for the Palomino Valley area. The fire has destroyed multiple structures. It is currently 95 percent contained.
Crews are gaining ground on several other fires burning in northern Nevada. The Truckee fire is now 100% contained after burning nearly 99,000 acres since starting on Monday between Wadsworth and Nixon. The Earthstone Fire is 92 percent contained and has burned over 42,000 acres since starting Monday. The Limerick fire in Pershing County is now 97 percent contained and has burned 15,000 acres in Limerick Canyon, northeast of Lovelock.
