Washoe County’s Point in Time count of the Homeless, done in January, says there are 1,690 people experiencing homelessness, which is a slight increase compared to last year’s count of 1,605. They added that the higher number is due to an increase in the number of people in emergency shelter. The total number includes 329 people who were living unsheltered, such as in a tent or car on the on street, a 21 percent decrease from the previous year’s count of 417. There were 1,361 people living in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs, a 14.5 percent increase from 1,188 in 2022. Washoe County says at least 336 people formerly homeless are now house, and that efforts to get people into emergency shlters and out of tents have improved.
