Invasive Snail Found in Lake Tahoe

(Lake Tahoe, CA) — An invasive snail has been detected in Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Resource Conservation District announced the discovery of New Zealand mudsnails in the lake. The snails are smaller than a grain of rice and can quickly invade an ecosystem and crowd out native species. The Invasive Species Management team is determining how widespread the snails are and what to do about the infestation. Officials say invasive species sometimes get into the water from fishing gear, life vests, beach toys and boats, and that people should make sure their gear is clean and dry before introducing it to the lake.
