The Hill Fire that briefly threatened homes near Verdi is now fully contained. Forward progress was stopped at about 50 acres on Wednesday morning, about eight hours after the fire started and about five hours after some residents were told to evacuate. The fire was fully contained by 4:30 in the afternoon. Evacuation orders have since been lifted. Afternoon rain in the area helped crews get the flames out faster. The cause of the fire, which started on the California side of Dog Valley Road, is not known.
